Year 5

Welcome to Year 5!

My name is Mrs Fletcher I am Head of Year 5.

Year 5 involves a mix of emotions for pupils joining us in September as it is their very first year at James Bateman. My main aim for pupils in Year 5 is to ensure all pupils settle quickly and happily into their new school so that they can enjoy and achieve from the very moment they join us.

Transition to James Bateman

One of my main priorities is to ensure we offer our students a varied and substantial transition provision. This process starts in the academic year before joining us, when Year 4 students are given several opportunities to visit us for a range of activities such as: sports events, Science and Cookery workshops, welcome assemblies, live Q&A sessions with the year 5 team and visits from myself as the Head of Year. Both parents and students are given transition booklets whilst at their first school, which include information about James Bateman, as well as tasks to complete for their future teachers.

As students join us in Year 5, they transition from lower key stage 2 in their first school to upper key stage 2 by strengthening and securing their existing knowledge and skills and experiencing new learning. Year 5 is about embracing new challenges and responsibilities, forming positive new relationships and developing increasing independence. We aim to support our students by delivering a broad and balanced curriculum in a positive and engaging learning environment.

Each year I am always blown away with the resilience and maturity that our youngest year group arrives with to start their journey with us at James Bateman!

Celebrating Achievement – Champions of Year 5

Achievement is of course, significant at James Bateman and is celebrated through various reward schemes throughout the school. In year 5, we also recognise and reward those students who go above and beyond and consistently demonstrate the 3 R’s; 'Ready, Respect, Resilient' in day to day life.

Enrichment

Throughout the school, we encourage high standards of behaviour and as a reward, offer a wide range of inspiring and fulfilling trips, events and rewards throughout the school year. This year in Year 5 we have the following planned:

  • Field trip to Chatterley Whitfield Mine to help develop their learning of local history in and around Biddulph.
  • Geography expedition to explore the local area of Biddulph Grange Gardens.
  • Remembrance trip to the National Memorial Arboretum.
  • Christmas Celebration – Pantomime  trip to the New Vic Theatre
  • Annual residential trip to Laches Wood  (over 4 days/3 nights)
  • Bikeability Level 1

And so much more….

I look forward to meeting you in the future.
